EDUCATION

Children living in Anderson attend the schools of Anderson School District Five, which is part of the Anderson County School System. Comprised of an Academy of the Arts, two early childhood centers, nine elementary schools, three middle schools (with another one soon to be built), two high schools, and the Hanna-Westside Extension Campus, students are ensured an excellent education that will prepare them for their higher learning studies and future careers. Private and parochial schools are also available throughout Anderson for those who are looking to learn in a faith-based environment. In terms of institutions of higher learning, Anderson serves as the home of Anderson University and Forrest Junior College. Other local colleges located in proximity to Anderson include Clemson University, Southern Wesleyan University, and Tri-County Technical College.

ECONOMY

Anderson is particularly known for its very vibrant and active economy. The top industries in the city include Health Care, Education, Banking, Local Businesses and Retail. Furthermore, a solid number of residents work for the city in the Public Service field as police officers, fire fighters, and many hold various government positions.

ATTRACTIONS

Anderson is known for its abundance of activities and attractions. One of its most well-known draws is the phenomenal Arts Center. The Arts Center features local and national art exhibits, as well as comprehensive arts programs and a number of community based art projects.

The Anderson Civic Center is another popular venue among locals. Featuring various community events, performers, trade and craft shows and a fantastic sports complex, the Civic Center is frequented by residents and visitors alike. One of the most famous events that is held there is the All-American Rhythm and Blues Festival, which draws in close to 200,000 visitors each year.

Anderson’s favorite festival of the year is the annual Celebrate Anderson!, which is celebrated each year the day before Labor Day. The event includes many fantastic musical guests, such as the GAMAC Orchestra, fireworks, sports, food, face-painting and more! The event is an all-day, all night affair that truly celebrates Anderson. Another community event that residents look forward to is the annual “Soiree!” Soiree is a weekend-long event that features film festivals, street magic, and live entertainment. It is held every April and is indeed a favorite!

One can’t make a run through Anderson without making a quick visit to its downtown district. Known for its energy and vibrancy, Anderson’s downtown district features Anderson City Hall, the “Old Reformer” brass cannon, and Christopher Orre’s Tavern.

PARKS AND RECREATION

Anderson is known for its state of the art Recreational Center, which features multiple gyms, a weight room, conference rooms and a jogging track. Locals also have access to the Jim Rice Center which holds multiple athletic fields including two spacious baseball fields. The Sheppard Swim Center includes a 25-metre pool, a separate pool with diving boards, a wading pool, a sun deck, as well as game and snack facilities.

The most popular park in the area is Darwin Wright Park. This lovely park overlooks Lake Hartwell, a gorgeous body of water that many locals enjoy fishing and swimming in. Darwin Wright Park holds camping grounds, a boat dock, and a 9-hole golf course.
Other charming parks include Bea Thompson Park, Cater’s Lake, D.B. Walker Park and St. Francis Park.

If you’re a golf enthusiast, then you’re in luck as Anderson is located within a short driving distance from two courses: the Anderson Country Club and Cobb’s Glen Country Club. Both Anderson and Cobb’s Glen are part of the AAG Golf Group management company which prides itself on providing excellent, well maintained courses, excellent value, and over 60 years of experience in facilities management. Other courses that are part of the AAG Golf Group include Brookstone Meadows, Pickens, Woodhaven, and Boscobel. Anderson Country Club includes 18 holes, a par-71 and a slope rating of 123, while Cobb’s Glen Country Club is also an 18-hole course, a driving range, putting green, and full-service onsite pro shop.
